John Sperry
Born in 1956, John Sperry is a self-taught artist who first encountered folk art in an Atlanta shop. He felt that the work he saw conveyed such a great amount of feeling through its fun, free-form style that he was inspired to go home and begin painting again for the first time since his childhood. These paintings of his almost immediately attracted an audience and three months after he started painting, he quit his corporate job to pursue painting full-time. That was 20 years ago now!
His current paintings are created with oil pastels and acrylics on wood. He paints subjects that speak to him. He mainly uses bright colors and incorporates his feelings into the paintings. Humor is evident in many of his works and without it, life would be oh so dull. His art has the ability to make people laugh and smile. Perhaps, this may be the greatest quality of it.
